Hardware://Pwnagotchi

The Pwnagotchi is defined on is official website as a Deep Reinforcement Learning for WiFi pwning. It’s also a fun project around a raspberry pi zero. The mounting part, customization and software part are a good way to learning and experiment too.

The materials you need

First you will need a Raspberry Pi to start, and that’s the only thing you need to try it. The zero is the smallest board, and recommanded one, so if you wanna travel with this bad bwoy you better go for this one. A microSD card is also required for the OS.

Second, you need these optional things :

  • a compatible battery or a usb power bank
  • an oled screen or other compatible screen (check the project page)
  • eventually an external antenna for better signal
  • a case (you can print one if you have a 3d printer)
  • a realtime clock so your pwnagotchi won’t have an approximative time

Some users make them big with screen, some make them small and headless as you can connect to your pwnagotchi through your phone or computer.

The sofware part

You will find the full OS on the pwnagotchi website. It’s packaged with all you need to make it alive.

After that you have to connect you need some configuration. I will not give all the details here. You can find everything on the configuration page. From my experience, the hardest part is to connect your raspberry to a PC running Windows. You will need the right driver so the Raspberry will be recognized as Usb network adaptater. After that it will have his own private network between your computer and the raspberry.

Usage

Your pwnagotchi will try to communicate with all Wifi around you. Caution : using it on others wifis can be illegal, depending on your country’s laws. As it will try to deauth the internet box or other hotspot, it can stop every peripherals from accessing their network.

With his integrated IA, he will also try to be more aggressive or calm, depending of his mood.

  • You can design your own case or grab an already designed one
  • It embarks a version of Bettercap who can be a useful hacking tool too
  • You can use encrypted communication between other pwnagotchies
  • It’s cute AF.
